Lonar Sarovar is a lake that formed due to a meteorite. Can you imagine how large the meteriote could have been that formed a lake as huge as Lonar. The diameter of the lake is more than a kilometer and the crater rim has an average diameter of clode to 2 kilometers.
It is believed that the meteorite fell somewhere between to 575000 years to 47000 years ago and it has been mentioned in ancient scriptures like Skanda Purana. The Ain – e- Akbari mentions usage of lake water for manufacturing of glass and soap. Various organizations have been studying properties of the water in the lake and new discoveries have come up frequently in recent past.
There are few temples on the periphery belonging to Yadava period and there is a smaller similar lake a few hundred meters away which is believed to have formed due to part of the larger meteor that fell little away before landing on earth.
