The biggest K-pop event in India starts from Delhi on 24th June

K-pop contest 2017 organised by Korean Cultural Centre India takes place this month and continues to July in Delhi, under the banner of K-POP World festival.

This year K-pop contest India celebrating the 6th edition started a journey to the Grand Finale in the biggest size ever. Total 898 participants had registered their singing and dancing videos on the online website http://kpopindia.com/ for the chance to be selected in the preliminary rounds that will take place in eleven regions, Delhi, Patna, Chennai, Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Odisha, Kolkata and Mumbai on the following dates:

Debuting in India, K-pop boy band ‘Lucente’ are the guest judges this year and will give special performances in Assam, Hyderabad and Mumbai. The group of seven boys over flowers are aiming at the Indian market even before making their first appearance in Korea.

This year, 257 contestants applied for the online round in Delhi, which is a remarkable growth as two times more than 2016. However, only 79 participants among them have the chance to go on stage of Delhi regional round at Korean Cultural Centre on 24th June.

The winners from the regional rounds compete for the Grand Finale on 29th July 2017 at Talkatora Stadium, New Delhi. The winning team at the grand finale will be nominated for the 2017 K-pop World Festival and go on a complimentary trip to Korea. Priyanka Mazumdar from Guwahati, the winner of the final round last year, won the Best Vocal Award in as a representative of India at the World K-pop Festival held in Changwon, South Korea, 2016. “I can’t get over the experience of being in Korea and performing on the same stage as K-pop stars. I still feel like I’m living in those days “ , says Priyanka as sharing her experience in Korea. She is now participating in 2017 K-pop Academy that has started from 5th June for one-month exclusive training for selected 20 students to pursue her aspiration and love for K-pop.

Mr Kim Kum Pyoung, Director of Korean Cultural Centre India, said “This year’s contest will be bigger than ever and amuse all music lovers around India with addictive K-pop songs. We support and encourage the regional rounds organised by K-pop fans to become a festival itself.”

BRIEF ABOUT K-POP

K-POP is a musical genre characterised by a wide variety of audiovisual elements, described as a modern form of South Korean pop music covering mostly dance-pop, pop ballad, electronic, rock, hip-hop, R&B, etc. The craze and the jazz for this genre of music are extremely popular and global.

Last year, Priyanka Mazumdar from Guwahati, Assam, won the first prize in vocal category at the ‘K-POP Contest 2016 India’ grand finale, and was nominated to participate in the K-POP World Festival 2016 in Changwon, South Korea. She won the 3rd prize for vocal category, representing India amongst participants from 65 countries.

K-Pop marked its presence in India four years ago through Psy's Gangnam Style. With almost over 70 countries taking part every year, India is also fast pacing with the Hallyu wave (Korean entertainment and Pop culture), and since the year 2012, Korean Cultural Centre India has been organising the ‘K-POP Contest India’ every year.

BRIEF ABOUT LUCENTE

LUCENTE is a South Korean boy band consisting of 7 members under Noga Entertainment. They are set to debut this year in Japan and India. As the group’s name means to shine brightly, those boys in 20s show bright talents on singing and dancing. They are aspired to become a next world K-pop star, especially in India.
