Shariq Mustafa (1st March, 1992) is today the 5th generation of the Thirakwa
lineage. He is an Indian tabla player and hails from the Farukhabad gharana. He has assimilated the highly evolved and complex heritage of various tabla styles from his father and late grandfather, Rashid Mustafa Thirakwa and Ahmed Jan Thirakwa.
While the school of percussion he represents is very old, Shariq Mustafa brings to bear on it a very contemporary mind, which is sensitive to the eternal values of ancient music systems.
Started at a very early age his interest in traditional music of all cultures has
inspired friendship with western musicians. In (2016) Shariq collaborated with
Patsy Reid a renowned fiddle player from the UK and in ( 2017 ) he collaborated with Manuel Hermia a Belgian musician and soprano player.
Considered a child prodigy Shariq Mustafa is a much sought after musical
performer, as both a vocalist and percussionist. His singing style has been enriched by the contribution of his maternal grandfather Ustad Sabri Khan (1927-2015)
Shariq Mustafa has performed in concerts and given solo performances throughout the world. Recent performances have included: 6th Jashan-e-Rekhta, Indo-French Musical Meet, National Art Museum. India Habitat Centre, India International Centre, India Islamic Centre, International Jazz Festival( New Delhi), The London Jazz festival( Southbank Centre, London, United Kingdom, (year)), the Ottawa music festival(Canada), Lugano Estival Jazz(Lugano, Switzerland,( year)). He has also performed for the late President of India Sri. Pranab Mukherjee at the Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi, india, Chief Justice of India Sri. Sharad Arvind Bobde on the occasion of International Judiciary Conference.
His grasp and understanding of the musical subtleties and his fertile creative
imagination is resultant of his sincere devotion and learnings from the various
maestros he has performed with namely Ustad Sabri khan, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia, Ustad Shujaat Khan, Ustad Amaan Ali Bangash, Ustad Ayaan Ali Bangash, Ustad Nishat Khan, Ustad Kamal Sabri Khan.
Shariq Mustafa has worked with Suhail Yusuf Khan on the album, “lonely
meadow” and with Ritesh Prasanna on the album “ ode to dusk”. He will soon be releasing his first solo tabla album capturing the authentic sound of the Thirakwa legacy.
