The talk will unravel the history behind the Pune Municipal Corporation’s proposed road projects on Vetal Tekdi, how ordinary Punekars have kept the tekdi safe since the eighties, the strategy of misrepresentations and smokescreens that PMC uses to push its case and where we stand today.
Dr. Sumita Kale is a financial and macro-economist, CEO and senior fellow at Indicus Foundation. She has an M.Phil in Economics of Developing Countries from the University of Cambridge and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Pune. Her work spans financial inclusion and development economics, currently focusing on the intersection of climate risk and financial resilience. She has contributed numerous research publications and opinion pieces in leading newspapers. Dr. Kale has her own monthly newsletter on financial inclusion, which includes readership from the top echelons of the RBI, Ministries and financial institutions. As co-founder of Deccan Gymkhana Parisar Samiti, she has been one of Pune's active voices for local civic and governance issues and has been deeply involved from Vetal Tekdi Bachav Kruti Samiti to protect the city's largest urban forest
