Indian rape laws have constantly evolved, from widening the scope of the definition of rape to stricter punishment, aiming to protect the victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.
However, an alarming trend has been noticed - an increase in false rape allegations by women.
In August, while observing that filing false rape cases needs to be dealt with strictly, the Allahabad High Court imposed a cost of INR 10k on a woman who lodged false FIRs against four men accusing them of rape.
Why is there an increase in false rape allegations by women? How can lawyers protect their clients in such cases? What is the impact of false allegations on the lives of the wrongly accused? What are the changes that lawmakers need to make to address the issue?
