Itinerary:-

Day 01: Journey starts

  • Leave from Delhi at 7 PM

Day 01: Dehradun to Pantwadi – 95 km drive and 4.5 km trek to the campsite

  • The journey for one or two-day trekking in Mussoorie is something which we all need at least once in our life. We begin the day early from Dehradun. This way we can avoid the traffic and continue towards Mussoorie and Kempty falls.
  • Mussoorie is 22 km from Dehradun and Kempty falls another 17 km further. The road continues downhill from here towards the Yamuna river bed and reaches the town of Nainbag.
  • There were two roads, one towards Yamunotri, while we went for the narrower road which climbed uphill of Pantwadi village. This takes us behind the Mussoorie ridge and into shepherd territory.
  • Gujjars with their domesticated sheep and goats are seen on hilltops. Terraced farms and hill slopes dotted with Bauhinia trees with their purple blossoms are a sight to photograph. These flowering trees are easily identified by their leaves which are in the shape of a camels' foot.

Day 02: Trek from campsite to Nag Tibba Trek top and back to Pantwadi – 12 km; Drove back to Dehradun.

  • We start the second-day post breakfast continuing the adventurous trek in the Himalayas and climbed to the Nag Devta temple. Temple premise is pretty ill maintained with no pujari but the locals do visit frequently to pay their obeisance.
  • There is a vast open space near the temple which is often used as a grazing ground for sheep and goats. The slope of the journey to Nag Tibba Trek rose further and had another 2 hours hike. The vegetation is a total change over here.
  • The forests become dense and are dominated by oaks and rhododendrons. The forest floor is also damp indicating the lack of sunlight reaching it. This is an ideal habitat for a variety of orchids (locally called kachina) to grow. However, with the pressure of grazing, lopping of oaks and trekking; this region is under anthropogenic pressure.
  • A variety of birds like the Niltava and flame back woodpecker are seen in the barks of oak trees. We follow the trail back to our campsite and after lunch head down to Pantwadi village. The trek down is easy and fast and can be covered in a couple of hours. We then proceeded onwards to Delhi by bus.
