Movie Screening - Mental Health at the Intersections

Apr 15 '23 | 01:00 PM (IST)

Event Information

Belongg invites you to a film screening of ‘Kathi Kathi Kaarana’ followed by a discussion with their contributors in collaboration with Unbox Cultural Futures Society, Quicksand and Wellcome. As a part of the “Mental Health at the Intersections” a series of online and offline (Bengaluru) gatherings, this film screening and discussion aims to explore how individuals from different caste, class, gender identities and occupational backgrounds build a safe space through film making and find their voices to tell their stories.

More about Kathi Kathi Kaarana:

A sanitation worker dreams of becoming a lawyer to fight for her and her fellow workers’ rights; a mother dreams of sharing her secrets and struggles with her child; a woman rehearses to prepare for a difficult conversation with her boyfriend...Kathi, Kathi, Kaarana is an anthology of ‘true fiction’, narrated and produced by the workers and their families from the city of Bangalore and facilitated by Varun Kurtkoti. The film marks the culmination of a pedagogical experiment — a weekend film school that explored that language of storytelling, wellbeing and mental health, and the birth of an artist collective.

More about the series of gatherings on “Mental Health at the Intersections”:

Belongg aims to build on the idea of intersectionality, not as an after-thought, but as a default way to approach mental healthcare research and interventions. Towards this, Belongg has curated a series of offline (in Bangalore) and online gatherings called “Mental Health at the Intersections''. The objective is to build a robust community of mental health practitioners to increase dialogue on intersectionality as well as build their capacity to support a more diverse background of clients and encourage collaboration on innovative intersectional interventions for mental health. We are doing this in the form of movie screenings, workshops, bringing in diverse perspectives such as that of artists, educators, advocates, users, talks, master classes and open mics.
