James Wales’s Mumbai: Then and Now
A Heritage Talk

KHAKI turns 5 this month! And to mark the occasion, the KHAKI Lab is hosting an exhibition of Scottish artist James Wales’s watercolour paintings of ‘Mumbai in the 1700s’ from 23rd to 26th January. KHAKI founder Bharat Gothoskar and photographer Jatin Lodaya went around the city to identify the locations from which Wales painted his landscapes and took pictures of what the same frames look currently. These photographs have been displayed alongside reprints of Wales's paintings.
The two of them have also collaborated on a talk about their findings through these explorations: ‘James Wales’s Mumbai: Then and now’. Together, they will give you a peek into Mumbai’s past and help you understand how its topography has changed as the city has evolved over time.

Date: 25th January 2020
Time: 6pm, preceded by tea and biscuits

Other events around the exhibition include a #TalkTheWalk with Dr Uday S Kulkarni, author of 'James Wales: Artist and Antiquarian in the court of Peshwa Sawai Madhavrao' on Sunday, 26th January, 2020, at 11.30 am. The book will be launched on the occasion. Eminent artist, Sameer Kulavoor, will also speak on ‘Art as the Chronicler of Times’ at the event.

About the presenters:
A mechanical engineer and marketer by profession, Bharat Gothoskar quit corporate life to become a heritage evangelist. His passion for heritage and history led to the birth of Khaki Tours, Khaki Heritage Foundation and Khaki Lab.

Jatin Lodaya too quit the corporate life to pursue his passions. A former chartered accountant, auditor, and financial controller, he now spends his time clicking, travelling, advocating financial literacy and mentoring.
