Innovating for disability inclusion has led to some of the most exciting technological developments of the last century, and it is certainly an area that promises huge potential for the future. Technology can provide answers when it comes to disability inclusion but over-reliance on technology to provide quick fixes to complex problems, is far-fetched.
The World Health Organization reports that 1.3 billion people, or 16 percent of the world’s population (1 in 6 of us), experience significant disability. Despite the technological advances, persons with disabilities find inaccessible and unaffordable transportation 15 times more difficult than for those without disabilities.
Is technology empowering or creating barriers for people with disabilities? What else is required, apart from technology-driven innovative solutions, to address the complex problem of inclusion? Are legal and policy professionals real allies of persons with disabilities? The webinar will address these questions with a specific focus on the transport and legal sectors. As for the legal professionals, we cannot remain on the sidelines on this issue and the legal profession needs to lead by example. Let us also learn how the legal sector is innovating and adapting itself to ensure there is better inclusion of persons with disabilities.
The webinar will bring together representatives of the transport, technology and legal sectors, members from disability forums, as well as other stakeholders. The webinar will be a good way to bring the issues forward one more time and exchange information for further promotion and protection of the rights of persons with disabilities.
At Grayspace, we advocate that along with equality, people with disabilities need `equity`, where people and society at large recognize that every individual is unique. It also means recognizing that we do not all start from the same place and must acknowledge and adjust imbalances.
