History of cotton fabric in India is as old as you can think of. Use of cotton fabric is witnessed in the Indian sacred texts like Rig Veda. Cotton fabric references are also mentioned in the older texts like Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranas. It is speculated that the first use of cotton was done during 3000 BC, when the excavation of Indus Valley Civilization took place especially in the area of Mohenjo Daro and Harappa. 



Indian subcontinent is rich in raw materials, fertile soil, favorable weather condition which is beneficial for the growth of cash crops like cotton, silk, jute, spices etc. Cultivation of cotton spread from India to other parts of the world like China, Egypt and other Asia Pacific areas. 

COTTON FABRIC 
One of the finest cotton fabrics is Muslin or malmal as popularly called in India. This fabric is soft and fine in texture. Cotton is widely used textile around the world because it’s soft, smooth and airy. It contributes to 56% of all the fibers in terms of its market share. It was during British rule in India when the Europeans also fell in love with this beautiful fabric. The crop requires  adequate amount of moisture and humidity to grow. Cotton plantation tends to grow in the warmer climate that’s why it was first cultivated in India as Indian weather is humid and warm at the same time with right amount of rainfall.
