Topic: Don't Break, Bend: Finding Your Resilient Flow in a Tough VUCA World.
Have you ever faced a moment that stopped you cold? Like leading your team days after losing someone dear, or seeing a product campaign flop? Perhaps a trusted partnership backstabbed you, just as rewards were near? We’re often told: "Just be resilient!" pushing alone, never cracking. But when life hits hard, what if true strength isn’t rigid and tough, but rather is... flowing and tender?
Think of an olive tree. It is incredibly tough, enduring centuries of storms by bending, its deep roots finding hidden water. True resilience isn't being unbreakable. It’s choosing to build your life, your teams, your projects, such that they can bend, be deeply rooted, and find refreshments, even when things get hard.
You might say, "But, I've got corporate fires to fight! This sounds too gentle and philosophical." I get it. For over 15 years, working in Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA) environments like those in African settings, without these elements of deeper resilience in leadership : learning to bend, to deepen those roots, to tap into waters, and to flow as a river, I would have broken. And I bet, you will break too if you don’t eventually borrow some of these lessons-learned.
Ø When leading projects? Plans will always hit bumps. Be resilient by adjusting fast, speaking up early, and asking for help. Your project won’t break, it will bend and like a river, find a new way forward.
Ø When leading people? Drop the "lone hero" act. Real strength is empowering your team and leaning on them too. Receiving help doesn't make you weaker, it makes everyone stronger. It creates a powerful current of shared purpose. This is the very spirit of Harambee: a collective pulling together, where every hand contributes to lift the whole.
Ø When driving innovation? Let go of what’s not working. Cheer when your team shares "flop lessons."This builds safe spaces where bold ideas can flow and thrive, like a river clearing its path. You’ll grow through change instead of drowning in it.

Learning Objectives
At the end of the session, you will have the following 3 take-aways:
1. Your "Olive-Tree" Strategy: Stop trying to fix everything alone. Build sspaces for shared support and problem-solving. Practice "stress-test drills" on key projects before crises hits. When setbacks happen (like a flopped launch), you’ll know how to rally everyone, learn fast, and find a new path forward together.
2. Your "Deep-Roots" Plan: Protect non-negotiable hours to refill your energy, like roots drawing water. This keeps your cup full before burnout or personal grief drains you, so you lead from abundance.
Ship "good enough" work faster; perfection paralyzes progress. Share one "flop lesson" monthly with your team to build trust through vulnerability.
3. Your "Legacy Soil" Foundations : Your sustainable impact flows from your wholeness. Build unshakeable trust and strong foundations, even after betrayals, by focusing on long-term relationships and purpose. Ask: "What is the impact of my response and reaction to this crisis in 20 years?"
