How to Play

The game is automatically triggered when users try to access a website while offline on Google Chrome. A small dinosaur icon appears with the message: “No internet”. Pressing the spacebar starts the game.

The gameplay is straightforward:

Press the spacebar or tap the screen (on mobile) to make the dinosaur jump over obstacles like cacti.

As the game progresses, the speed increases, and flying pterodactyls are introduced.

The objective is to survive as long as possible and beat your high score.

There’s no end to the game — it continues until the player hits an obstacle.

Design and Aesthetic

The Dinosaur Game features black-and-white 8-bit graphics, giving it a nostalgic retro arcade feel. The minimalist design is intentional and aligns with the concept of a “prehistoric” internet — a time before always-on connectivity.

Despite its simplicity, the animation is smooth and charming. The background even switches from day to night as the player progresses, adding a subtle but satisfying visual cue to long runs.

Origins and Development

The game was created by Sebastien Gabriel, Alan Bettes, and Edward Jung, members of the Chrome design team. The idea was to create something fun to pass the time while users were disconnected from the internet.

The developers jokingly referred to the T-Rex as Project Bolan, a nod to Marc Bolan, the lead singer of the band T. Rex.

Originally released in 2014, the game was later updated with new features like mobile compatibility, better performance, and minor design tweaks.
