CONTRAPTION

Jan 13 - 16 '23 | 08:00 AM (IST)

Event Information

EVENT OBJECTIVE:

Conservation of energy and mass are two rules which govern the universe. This event is designed towards converting energy from one form to another and driving a series of events that will ultimately carry out the given task. The more complicated the contraption, the higher the points earned.

EVENT STRUCTURE:

All the teams are expected to get 4 copies of the printed abstract for the event, clearly mentioning steps and chart, which shows all Energy conversions, reporting time on the second day of the fest to build your contraption is (14 January 2023).

List of materials required for the making of the contraption:

Estimated bill of material:

Contraption Design (200 words): An explanation and figure(s) showing the clear working of the contraption.

Points will be given on basis of:

• Closeness/alignment with this year’s theme (ANANTA KALAM – A limitless trajectory)

• Maximum conservation of energy.

• Number of energy conversions – (more the conversions, better it is!).

• Use of sustainable materials

SUMMARY OF CONTRAPTION:

Total no. of Distinct Steps:

Total no. of Repeated Steps:

Total no. of Bonus Steps (if any):

Total no. of Links:

A detailed write-up of each step-in sequence must be specified. Use of sketches, flow charts are allowed. Use the following tabular format.

SCORING PATTERN:

A – Completion of the task. (250 marks)

B – Points for theme-related steps. (Depending on steps; Decided by judges – out of 50)

C – Neatness, tidiness, and overall look of the contraption model. (30) D – Use of mechanical, chemical, and electrical energy. (15 for each)

E – Total repeated mechanical, chemical, and electrical energy. (5 for each)

F – Use of energy conversions except mechanical, chemical, and electrical. (15 foreach)

G – Total repeated energy conversions except mechanical, chemical electrical. (10 for each)

H – Total steps (not energy conversions) crossing the number 20 – (additional 1 each along with mentioned in points E and G)

I – Parallel energy conversions – (15 for each additional parallel branch, if any)

J – Number of bonus steps performed/displayed. (20 for each)

K – Points for abstract representation, simplicity, presentation, or explanation of contraption at the time of event & behavior of the team. (30 overall).

L – Points deducted due to hand touches. (20 for 3 hand touches, 40 for 4 hand touches, 60 for 5 hand touches)

M – Budget kept in mind while designing the contraption. (30 points)

N – Use of all the material (declared in the abstract) with an acceptable buffer amount +/- 2 (10 points will be deducted for each item wasted post buffer limit).

Formula Used:

Z = A + B + C+ D + E + F + G + H + I + J + K + M – L - N

Note: Points for [B, C, D, and K] are given and decided by judges.

Bonus Steps:

1. Display of message promoting ANANTA-KALAM.

2. Use of non-conventional sources of energy.

3. Conservation of energy during the contraption (e.g. switching off any appliance used, etc.).

Theme Related Steps:

This year's theme is 'ANANTA-KALAM’ A LIMITLESS TRAJECTORY.

Try to incorporate the steps involving the use of the things differing from the existing ones in work, and design. (e.g. using a bulb as a heat source)

You can claim points for such steps and if the judges found it appropriate then you can earn up to 30 points depending on the steps used.

RULES:

1. The minimum and maximum time for the contraption are 3 minutes and 6 minutes respectively. After 6 minutes, 30 Points per minute will be deducted per minute post 6 minutes from the total score.

2. The contraption setup is to be developed in an area with dimensions 6ft X 10ft, and the height must not cross 6ft; the setup should fit in an imaginary box of the above-mentioned dimensions.

3. All the materials required for the building of the contraption setup are to be carried and possessed by the respective team; MindSpark and the organizing committee shall have no responsibility towards the same.

4. All the participants are requested to prevent spillage of any kind of fluid and should take precautionary measures in case of any such step involved.

5. No harmful explosives that may cause harm to the surroundings are to be included in the making of the contraption.

6. 2 hand touches are allowed without deduction of points. Before the 3rd hand touch, the team would be given choice to go for 3rd hand

touch or to go for the second trial. For 3rd, 4th, and 5th touch 20, 40, and 60 points will be deducted respectively from the total score.

7. If the team decides to go for the second attempt, 60 points will be deducted initially, and 2 hand touches will be allowed further with a deduction of 30 and 60 points, respectively. The team will be disqualified if they exceed the permissible number of hand touches (5 for attempt 1; and 2 for attempt 2) in the respective trial.

8. Sufficient set-up time will be given and 1 hour will be given for each team for first attempt and second attempt of the model respectively. Only 2 attempts are allowed.

9. Final decisions made by judges and organizers will be binding to all.

10. Students should carry proof of identity issued by their institution.

11. Each team can have a maximum of 5 members.

12. The same person cannot be a member of more than one team. All teams involving a common person as a participant will be disqualified.

13. Participants are required to report on (13 Jan 2023).

14. Participants should take due safety measures in their models.

15. Rules are subject to change without prior intimation. Participants are requested to check the MindSpark '22 website (www.mind-spark.org) regularly for updates.

16. All decisions of Judges, Event Heads, and Organizers will be final and binding to all participants. No arguments shall be entertained.

17. Bring special tools of your own if you think they are important for the building of your Contraption.

18. Extension boards for any required power supply will be provided by the organizing committee.
