After the landmark play in Indian theatre - The Legends of Khasak, theatre director Deepan Sivaraman is all set to enthrall his audience with his new play The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a theatrical adaptation of the 1920 German classic expressionist film of the same name, is a dark, multi-layered psychological thriller that succinctly portrays our contemporary political milieu. Following the story of Dr. Caligari and a somnambulist who is put to nefarious use, it is a gripping tale of murder and mayhem.
Francis, the narrator of the plot, and his friend Alan encounter the crazed Dr. Caligari at a carnival in Holstenwall. They see Caligari showing off his somnambulist, Cesare, a hypnotized man who the doctor claims, can see into the future. Shockingly, Cesare predicts Alan's death, and by morning his chilling prophecy comes true - making Cesare the prime suspect. However, is Cesare guilty?, or is the doctor controlling him? or is it Francis who is narrating it all?
With the nuanced use of text, striking use of scenography, and elements of surrealism the play manifests as a scathing political commentary on the horrors of fascism. Potently philosophical in nature, this political allegory seeks to violently disrupt our notions of reality, forcing us to rethink our essentialised understanding of truth.
