Tawayafnama is a musical journey that transports us into the luminous yet forgotten world of the courtesans—women like Gauhar Jaan, Asgari Bai, Rasoolan Bai, Akhtari Bai, and Vidyadhari Bai—the true patrons of music, art, and culture in our country. These were women of intellect, grace, and unmatched artistry, who nurtured and preserved our classical traditions with devotion.
Yet, despite their brilliance, they lived lives
overshadowed by neglect and suppression, much like many other women of their time. In their thumri, dadra, kajri, and ghazals, one can hear not only the beauty of their craft but also the echoes of their silent struggles. Their contribution to India’s freedom movement remains largely unacknowledged, though deeply significant.
Tawayafnama is a tribute to their spirit—a homage to the women who worshipped their art, who made music their prayer, and whose artistry shaped an entire cultural era.
