Facilitator/ Speaker: Thomas McKay Moderator: Dahlia Fernandes
Led by acclaimed producer Thom McKay (www.exetersoundstudios.com - Platinum Awarded, 3 x Juno Nominated, signed to RCA UK, BMG UK, BMG Canada, Tommyboy NYC and Warner Chappell NYC) the session explores key questions like: How do you create space for each person prior to work starting ? How do you balance originality with commercial appeal? How should the work / time be structured and publishing handled fairly from the start?
Participants will gain insight into foundational rhythm section construction, using register choices and alternate chord voicings to create separation in a mix, and understanding the natural order of tracking—from instruments to vocals. The workshop also covers how to approach vocal tracking with intention, avoid overproduction, and recognize when a song is truly finished.
Finally, Thom will share commentary on mixing and mastering to help attendees elevate their sound. This is not just a workshop—it’s a deep dive into the art of making music with people, not just around them.
McKay's In-Studio credits include Joydrop, Nightcrawlers, Michaela May, Dahlia Fernandes, Peter Serrado, Billy Newton Davis, Brooke Pallson & The Fay Wrays. His live engineering credits include Eminem, Flaming Lips, Janelle Monae, Motorhead.
