What is SAP Business Objects Design Studio::

SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio is an application for building executive dashboards. 

Design Studio was one of the first SAP Business Intelligence (BI) applications built with mobility in mind, and is intended to be the successor to Business Explorer  Web Application Designer. It features native connections to SAP Business Warehouse (BW) and SAP HANA, the in-memory database platform. SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio also features iPad support, an HTML5 user interface and a WYSIWYG editor.

The functions and uses of SAP BusinessObjects Design Studio?

Design Studio is a SAP development environment for developers and business users to build web-based dashboards based on BW queries.  It is a successor to the Web Application Designer ("WAD") that used a mixture of html and pre-built widgets to deploy graphical dashboards to the portal.

Design Studio allows Javascript programming in order to read input values and bind objects to buttons, dropdown boxes, etc.  It is also being positioned as a successor to BO Dashboard Designer, which was more closely related to Excel and required significant hardcoding to achieve slick-looking results.

It is going through a rapid development cycle, at this writing it is at version 1.6 which was released in December 2015.  It has had strong support from SAP, but is still maturing as a product.  It occupies an interesting niche - not a full-fledged development environment, but still too complex for the average business user.  It has tight integration with both the BW (Netweaver) and BI (Business Objects) stacks - allowing dashboards to be transported in BW or else import/exported in BI.

It still has a few glaring deficiencies - for example, a common requirement is to be able to define a drill path, to allow clicking thru a set of graphs and drill down by sales area, by division, by customer, etc.  However these capabilities (like a pivot table slicer control) are not available and must be simulated via predefined drilldowns and radio buttons.  Compared to the BO 3.1 universes, the BICS connections are not as stable and can require frequent debugging.

The self service templates that were released with version 1.5 came a long way towards integrating the look and feel with SAP's *other* dashboarding solution, Lumira.  Future development may see the product lines merging together, as users have complained that too many development tools are being rolled out and their capabilities are overlapping.

The big plus is that SAP is strongly behind this tool, although its long term goal - to displace established third party dashboarding tools such as Tableau, Qlik or Spotify that businesses demand - remains tantalizingly out of reach.
