DUTY FREE came together as a band over the pandemic lockdown, but the members of Duty Free have been friends for more than two decades now, from college. The band’s roots lie in an older band called Rented House (featuring Sujoy, Bibek, and Rudraneil) that lasted for a while. It fell apart when neighbors in CR park objected to a rooftop gig, and called the police. We called it the ‘Fear and Loathing’ gig, but it ended the band for the time. Fast forward to the pandemic, when Jenny rediscovered her beautiful choir-trained voice, and Devalina learned to play the bass. We all work at other things over the week, and come together to play on weekends. We play originals and covers, broadly in the territory of pop, rock, and jazz/blues.
