Next up at PHBC is Music from Memory. Founded in Amsterdam in 2013 by Abel Nagengast, Jamie Tiller and Tako Reyenga, Music from Memory finds obscure sounds of the past that feel refreshingly relevant to today’s ears. Vice’s Thump has dubbed any release by Music from Memory as “a must-buy on sight.” And as the guys who started Red Light Radio and Red Light Records—a European institution for those in the know—it makes sense that these crate diggers are able to unearth the finest of forgotten vinyl.
Prime example: Michal Turtle’s album, “Music from the Living Room," which was completely overlooked when it came out in 1983. Originally recorded on a portastudio in his family’s living room, the reissue is revered for being ahead of its time, with minimal and ambient elements mixed into a soup of satisfying house. Pitchfork rated it 7.9/10 and the subsequent album, “Phantoms of Dreamland”—a double LP that features unreleased tracks recorded between 1983-85—was featured in a roundup of best reissues by Fact magazine. His 2018 release, “Return to Jeka” is already making waves and will be an exciting part of his show at our Sun Down Circle set with Music from Memory on 8 July at Potato Head Beach Club.
In addition to the musical element, SDC #025 will launch the first in a series of record label showcases and include a pop-up vinyl shop and limited edition T-shirts.
