physical 3d shapes: specifically, we will learn how to design and create wearable custom masks.
Using a simple wearable paper mask as a starting point, we explore how CAD software may be used to expand creative sculptural possibilities in both design and fabrication.
No previous knowledge of graphics software needed. We will learn
1) the basics of the free, open-source CAD program Inkscape,
2) basic techniques for forming 3d shapes from paper, and
3) how to use a Silhouette Cameo 3 desktop cutting machine to cut out our designs.
We will also spend some time discussing the wonderful and profound role of masks across human cultures, and their ability to impact both wearer and outside observer.
What you need to bring: Your computer, with the free program inkscape installed. Best to also bring a mouse.
