Art of the Sacred Earth – A Workshop on Kerala Murals
In collaboration with Pratiti Nadkar of Pratikrut Collective
Hosted by Kulture Katta
Immerse yourself in the sacred storytelling tradition of South India’s temple walls.
Join us for a deeply meditative and creative experience led by Pratiti Nadkar, founder of Pratikrut Collective, as we explore the timeless beauty of Kerala Mural Art — a classical Indian art form known for its vivid natural dyes, sacred motifs, and spiritual narratives.
Dive into the ancient heritage of Kerala mural painting through a hands-on, sustainable art experience using natural dye colors on eco-friendly cow-dung paper (8x8 inches).
In this session, participants will explore and paint traditional floral and nature-based motifs — an ideal starting point for beginners:
Lotus (Thamara): A timeless symbol of purity and divinity, painted in beautifully stylized layers.
Creepers and Vines: Flowing natural forms used to enhance borders and backgrounds, teaching fluid brushwork and balance.
Peacock (Mayil): Known for its graceful form, this motif introduces detailing and color blending techniques.
You will also learn the basics of Kerala mural linework, natural color mixing, and the deep symbolism behind each motif — all while working with sustainable materials that honor the roots of this ancient tradition.
In this 2.5-hour hands-on workshop, you will:
Discover the origin and spiritual significance of Kerala murals
Learn to draw traditional motifs using ancient techniques
Paint with natural dyes on eco-friendly cow-dung paper
Create your own Kerala mural to take home
Whether you're an art lover, a curious beginner, or a culture enthusiast, this workshop is your doorway into one of India’s most revered folk traditions. No prior experience is needed — just your curiosity and creativity.
