About the Walk
In this Onam special, let's explore the forgotten magnificence of the Royal town. Tripunithura was the seat of power of the Cochin Royal Family from the beginning of the 19th Century after moving from Mattancherry. We will engage in the fascinating stories of the Cochin Royal Family, their legacy and history, the architectural and spatial peculiarities of the town of Thripunithura planned around the Poornathrayeesa temple while taking the participant through some of the important sites inside the Tripunithura Fort. We will explore the contribution of the Royals to multiculturalism, public infrastructure, the National Movement and the conservation of traditional art forms in Cochin State said through a storyteller from the family.

About the Storyteller
Born in Cochin and raised in Bangalore, Balagopal Varma is a heritage and travel enthusiast and has been organizing heritage walks in Tripunithura and Ernakulam for the past few years. His work on heritage conservation and travel is focused on the erstwhile Cochin State, which is slowly disappearing from collective memory along with its built heritage. Balagopal resides in Tripunithura and is closely connected with the Cochin Royal Family and his grandfather was the titular Elaya Raja of Cochin.
