The complexity of software required for modern 21st century cyber-physical systems greatly exceeds that of software found in “classical” real-time and embedded systems. These systems cover a wide spectrum of “smart” software applications such as robotics, complex communications systems, process control systems, self-driving cars, smart cities, Internet of Things, etc. This added complexity is not only a consequence of the desire for more sophisticated functionality but is also due to the inherent and irreducible complexity of the physical environments in which the software operates. This requires new and more capable development methods and technologies.
At Advanced Software Design for 21st Century Cyber-Physical Systems Masterclass, we will describe the causes & effects of complexity, both in general & specific to CPS. Consider the evolution of complexity and identify the limitations of current methodologies & organizations for dealing with future CPS.
