Aug 10 '19 | 10:00 AM (IST)

Event Information

On the Island of Salsette, in western outskirts of Mumbai are the Kanheri caves. Popular narratives tell us a lot of stories about their origin. This tour, however, will seek answers on its own. The immersive, experiential visit will help us understand how the Kanheri caves are historically important to the establishment of the mega polis Mumbai. We will have a bunch of mysteries to ponder upon- How did the Buddhist monks find this place? Who built the sculptures? How did the news about the caves reach the traders? Are these caves natural? How did they live here and what values did they hold close? This region was integral to a thriving trade route and attracted traders from all over the world. Together, we will unearth these and many other mysteries of the Buddhist connection to this far-off location.
The sustainable architecture and rainwater harvesting system of these caves will pique your interest. Their practices will make you wonder if the solutions to global water wars is in systems like these.
Many questions like these will cross your mind - the answers to which lie in within the caves, waiting to be unraveled.
