Pune Knowledge on Tap: Being creative in the era of AI

Abstract: Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) is now capable of producing artifacts like poems, essays, paintings, scientific hypotheses and informed critiques. In many cases, the quality of these artifacts is such that it is difficult to tell the difference between human and AI generated outputs. What does this imply for the poets, writers, painters, scientists etc.? Should they just migrate to jobs that do not involve competing against Gen AI? Should you bother about this issue if you have not thought of yourself as a creative person and your work hardly requires more of you than a tidy PowerPoint presentation? These questions do not have generally accepted answers and I do not claim that I am any better. I will simply present my own biased / opinionated thoughts and try to send you home with your own.

About the Speaker: Sutirth Dey is a Professor of Biology at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune. He works in the field of ecology and evolution. For the last three years, he has been interested in Artificial Intelligence and trying to contemplate its impact on research, teaching, and society in general.
