About the Workshop:
Cherial Scroll Painting – a traditional 400 years old art form. which is a pride of Telangana State. Basically in the olden days the rural people entertained with several activities like puppets, storytelling, etc. In these storytelling Cherial scroll paintings played vital role. The story tellers used to carry scroll painting from one village to other village by telling stories. It is an interesting tradition of combining a singing rendition of stories with marvelous illustrated pictures.

In good olden days there were many scroll painters in Telangana region earning their livelihood by indulging in preparing the paintings on the cloth rolls running to several feet length. Initially it is termed as ‘Telangana Scrolls’. The Nakashi paintings are presently known as ‘Cherial Scroll’. As the Nakashi paintings permeated gradually into the traditions and
cultural milieu in Telangana, the local balladeers lapped up the idea of using these dolls and dolls as illustrations. These art and craft have come in the handy for adding spice to their narration and performing arts. A publication brought out by ‘Craft Council of Andhra Pradesh’ in 1982, indicates that that existence of the Cherial craft came to be known only in the year 1975. Till that time it is a craft known only among the villages of Telangana country side.
