1858: Jewish Housewife found brutally murdered in her bedroom
1862: Bengali sex-worker found dead in Central Calcutta”
1870-78: Little Girls go missing from North Calcutta
1881: A Queen & her accomplices rob a Jewelry Store and Kill the Munshi
1883-84: Six Women Mysteriously Murdered in North Kolkata”
All of these cold-blooded murders were some of the most challenging cases handled by the Detectives of the Calcutta Police Department in the 19th century. Most of these involve the eternal chase of one Bengali Police Detective and his elusive convict.
This virtual walk will explore these and many other chilling stories straight from the memoirs of the detectives themselves, through the places directly associated with these crimes. We will also discuss why certain murders received more attention in the contemporary press than others as an extension of the deeply entrenched patriarchy of the time. The walk will also interrogate contemporary socio-cultural racial and gender dynamics to situate the victims, perpetrators and the police.
The walk will be conducted in English.
The walk will be conducted via Zoom. Participation link will be shared with all those who have registered 12 hours before the tour via email. Please check your Spam folder in case you have not received the link or get in touch with us at contact@immersivetrails.com for any queries.
