In 1784 Lt. Col. Mark Wood drew a detailed map of the European settlement in Calcutta. Several streets and buildings and other features of the landscape that Mark Wood’s map depict, still survive, albeit in different names. In this heritage walk we will retrace the steps of Lt. Col. Mark Wood to explore streets and identify buildings depicted in this 1784 map of European Calcutta. While doing this, the explorers will learn about the history of the city between 1757 and 1807, a 50 year period following the Battle of Plassey when Calcutta emerged as the “Second City of the British Empire”.
The walk will be conducted via zoom. You will receive coordinates from the walk leader at least 12-hours before the scheduled start time of the walk.
Start Time: 19:00 (India) | 14:30 (UK) | 09:30 (US-Eastern)
Duration: Approx 2.5 hrs
