Event Information

In order to continue the process of learning from home, we are bringing a series of virtual Researching Heritage sessions for you throughout Summer 2020.

This two-day virtual workshop is about Researching Family Histories.

Session 1 (24th May 2020; 19:00-20:30 Indian Standard Time)

On the first day of the workshop, we will discuss various methods of researching your family history. This includes basic training in how to collect oral histories and how to use heirlooms and other material culture to tease out aspects of your family history. Finally, we will look at how to make a proper family tree and contextualize your family's experience over time and space within larger regional and world events.

At the end of the session, you will be given a task to complete for the next session.

Session 2 (31st May 2020; 19:00-21:00 Indian Standard Time)

The second session is hands-on. Here you will talk about the family history research that you have done in the week after the first session, and we will explore the interconnectivities between participants' families' experiences over time and space. We will also problem solve for any difficulties or questions that arose during your family history research over the previous week.

Learning Outcomes:
  1. Grasp of basic family history research methods leading to the practical implementation of the methods.
  2. Ability to create a basic family tree.
  3. Connect family experiences over time and space to major historical events, local and global.

Who can join the session:

These sessions are meant to be capacity building sessions for non-expert members of the heritage and culture enthusiast community who want to learn about conducting their own research into their family's history. So you do not have to be an expert to be a part of these sessions.

The sessions are open to anyone from anywhere in the world, who wants to learn about family history research methods and get some practical experience.
