Event Information

The Story of Bombay is one of many an interesting tale. Legend has it, that when the British got the 7 islands of Bombay as a dowry for the Portuguese, King Charles was made to believe it lay somewhere close to Brazil? Of course he was shocked to learn that these islands, in the middle of nowhere were home to fishermen and mosquitos. A whole lot of mosquitos. So much so, that the Bombay islands was called the land of "2 monsoons", where the life expectancy was a mere two years before you succumbed to an illness. It made sense then to lease these islands to the East India Company at an annual rent of 10 pound sterling. 10 pound sterling was the cost of 1 pound of tea. British and tea, quite poetic we say.

EIC saw its potential and that's where the growth of Mumbai was envisaged as the first city of India: Urbs Primus in Indus. It became the second most populous city in the British empire and most important city of commerce to the East of the Indies. A walk through the South Precinct of the city is like walking back in time when the British Empire was at its zenith and stories of war, racism, arranged marriages and even aliens, among other fascinating tales, have been lost in its stones.

This tour though is all about stories, folklore and legends that exist in the labyrinth. Our focus is on unknown stories that bring these structures to life.
