#RatnagiriRocks - Konkan’s Stone Age Carvings by Dr Tejas Garge

Petroglyphs from the Stone Age have been recently discovered in Ratnagiri district at sites scattered across 300 km. These images, created by removing part of the rock surface by incising, picking, carving, or abrading, mostly represent faunal and geometrical motifs, and provide an authentic commentary on the man-land relationship during the so-called ‘Dark Age’ of the Konkan region. They are also an evidence of human dynamism on the western coast of India. On our Online Talk #RatnagiriRocks, archaeologist Dr Tejas Garge narrates the story of transition from the Stone Age to the recorded historical period through the Mesolithic culture practicing rock carving thousands of years ago in the Konkan region.

About the speaker:
Dr. Tejas Garge is Director of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Maharashtra, and has been working in the field of Archaeology and Heritage Management for the past two decades. He specialises in Harappan Civilisation and Firearms, while his other areas of interest include Museums and Exhibitions, Indian Art and Architecture, Forts and Fortifications, History of Indian Art and Architecture, Marine Archaeology, Heritage Management and Legislation. He has a PhD from the Deccan College and Research Institute, and has authored 2 books, 7 monographs and several research articles.
