Melbourne based, Delhi raised, Tokyo born Alternative Singer-Songwriter/Composer-Producer Avi Misra launches his fifth album 'Nostalgia' at Depot 48 in Melbourne, CBD on the 2nd of March 2023.
Best known for his signature baritone and transcendentalist poetry, Misra seamlessly blends classic rock sensibilities with electronica experimentations and Hindustani textures to make a sound that’s his own. His songs are vivid, thought provoking and soulful. His production ethos is refreshingly organic with synths, guitars and finger drumming recorded live, with vocals that are never autotuned.
Lyrically, this album is born out of lockdown reflections from his childhood and adolescence growing up in New Delhi with the memories of Japan ever lingering. Though deeply personal, song themes of a first love in a 90’s Delhi, adolescent rebellion dabbling in mind expansion, an obsession with fast bowling and a loving homage to his parents make this Misra’s most relatable album yet.
Sonically, the album is bathed in layers of eccentric harmonics, hummable melodies and deep nuanced layers full of character. 'Nostalgia' presents a 21st century take on Classic Synth Rock and No Wave, animated by the rich sonic flavours of legendary synthesizers like the Moog System 55, Japan’s greatest synth - The Yamaha CS 80, and the Hammond Novachord that Misra got to record courtesy a scholarship at The Melbourne Electric Sound Studio (M.E.S.S)
